10 Plants That Can Poison Pups

10 Plants That Can Poison Pups

Keep this greenery out of your house and yard.
http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-lifestyle/10-plants-that-can-poison-pups.aspx

By. Arden Moore
For eight years, Jill Richardson, D.V.M., was the voice of safety at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, Ill. She fielded calls from frantic owners worried that their dogs had eaten a toxic leaf, stem, or flower.
To protect her own dogs, Richardson made certain that poisonous plants never made their way into her Urbana home or her yard's landscape. "People are often surprised to learn that there are actually hundreds of plants potentially poisonous to dogs," says Richardson, who left the ASPCA to become associate director of consumer relations for Hartz Mountain Corp. in Secaucus, N.J.
Richardson identifies the top 10 most common poisonous houseplants and landscape plants dog owners should avoid:
Autumn crocus (Colchicum): Its active ingredient, colchicines, triggers an anti-metabolic effect that can cause rapidly dividing cells, shedding of the gastrointestinal tract, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.
Azalea (Rhododendron): This popular plant can harm a dog's cardiovascular system and trigger vomiting or gastrointestinal upset.

Daffodil (Narcissus): Toxic ingredients in the bulbs cause convulsions, tremors, lethargy, weakness, and upset stomachs.

Hyacinth (Hyacinth): This popular plant can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, depression, and tremors.

Japanese yew (Taxis): Extremely toxic to dogs, this group of ornamental plants can cause seizures or cardiac failure. The plant and red berries are toxic.

Lily of the valley (Convalaria): This plant can cause heart failure, coordination problems, and vomiting.

Oleander (Nerium): Extremely toxic, this popular outdoor plant contains cardiac glycosides that harm the heart, decrease body temperature, cause abnormal pulse rate, and can cause death. Beware: Even people have died from eating hot dogs roasted on an oleander twig.

Rhubarb (Rheum): Although the stalks are used to make pies, the leaves pack the potential to cause kidney damage.

Sago palm (Cycads): Resembling an upside down pineapple, this plant thrives in sandy soils, especially in warmer states such as California, Texas, and Florida. A few seeds can kill a dog.

Tomato (Lycopersicion): Surprisingly, the greenery of this common plant, not the tomato itself, contains solanine, a toxic ingredient that can prompt gastric upset, depression, weakness, and a decrease in heart rate.

Richardson's parting advice: Keep your dog away from any mushrooms. "Always assume any ingested mushroom by a dog is toxic and will cause liver failure," Richardson says. "The problem is that many poisonous mushrooms often grow together with non-poisonous mushrooms."

Prunella Vulgaris is an edible and medicinal herb, and can be used in salads, soups, stews, or boiled as a pot herb. Used as an alternative medicine for centuries on just about every continent in the world, and for just about every ailment known to man, Heal-All is something of a panacea, it does seem to have some medicinal uses that are constant.
Prunella's most useful constituents are Betulinic-acid, D-Camphor, Delphinidin, Hyperoside, Manganese, Oleanolic-acid, Rosmarinic-acid, Rutin, Ursolic-acid, and Tannins. The whole plant is medicinal as alterative, antibacterial, antipyretic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, febrifuge, hypotensive, stomachic, styptic, tonic, vermifuge and vulnerary.
A cold water infusion of the freshly chopped or dried and powdered leaves is a very tasty and refreshing beverage, weak infusion of the plant is an excellent medicinal eye wash for sties and pinkeye. Prunella is taken internally as a medicinal tea in the treatment of fevers, diarrhea, sore mouth and throat, internal bleeding, and weaknesses of the liver and heart. Clinical analysis shows it to have an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of pseudomonas, Bacillus typhi, E. coli, Mycobacterium tuberculi, which supports its use as an alternative medicine internally and externally as an antibiotic and for hard to heal wounds and diseases.

It is showing promise in research for herpes, cancer, AIDS, diabetes, and many other maladies.

Herbal Remedy May Help Combat Endometriosis and Cancer

Taken from: http://www.cancermonthly.com/iNP/view.asp?ID=231

The Chinese herb Prunella vulgaris (PV) may prove an effective treatment for women with endometriosis and certain types of cancer because of its anti-estrogen properties, according to research published in the November 5 issue of the journal, Biology of Reproduction.

Although the female hormone, estrogen is crucial to reproduction, it can have some negative side effects, fueling the abnormal cell growth that occurs in diseases such as endometriosis and cancer.  To treat these diseases, doctors have turned to tamoxifen and other anti-estrogen medications, but these drugs can have significant side effects.
In their search for an alternative to anti-estrogen medications, researchers in Greenville, South Carolina focused their attention on several possible herbal remedies. “We had 20 herbs in the lab that included Prunella vulgaris,” says Bruce Lessey, MD, PhD, vice chair of Research, and director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Greenville Hospital System. PV is found in Europe and Asia and is often used to treat painful periods.  “There had been one study previously suggesting that a related herb, Prunella stica, had anti-estrogen properties. So we screened the herbs, and this one really jumped out.”
When Dr. Lessey and his colleagues tested the herb on endometrial cancer cells, they discovered that it significantly reduced the cancer cells’ growth. In mice implanted with human endometriosis, PV also reduced the number of abnormal endometrial tissue growths. The herb was just as potent as a synthetic anti-estrogen drug used in the study. The only side effect researchers have noted in ongoing human studies of PV has been an increase in headaches in some women.
There were concerns that, because of its anti-estrogen properties, PV might negatively impact fertility. Yet PV had virtually no effect on the fertility of female mice tested in the study. In fact, the researchers say the herb might actually improve the odds of conception in women who are struggling with infertility due to endometriosis, because it blocks the harmful actions of estrogen that can interfere with embryo attachment and implantation.
The benefits and low risks of PV make it a promising therapy for diseases like endometriosis and cancer. “My interest in the herb is the fact that we can block the action of estrogen and do it in a way that has very few side effects,” Dr. Lessey says. “So this might be beneficial as an adjunct treatment for patients who have had breast cancer or endometrial cancer to help prevent a recurrence.”
“I think PV will find a place, because women will accept it because it’s herbal and therefore natural, and probably they’ll have greater access to it,” he adds. PV, also known as “Self Heal,” is readily available in health food stores as a dried herb that can be made into a tea.
Upcoming studies will help clarify what role PV might have in treating endometriosis and cancer. “It really does not seem to be at all harmful, and because it seems to be a potent anti-estrogen, it deserves future research,” Dr. Lessey says.
If you are interested in using PV you should consult with your healthcare provider.

Skin-Tags Oh My!

Don't ya hate those dreadful skin tags?

They don't really bother me and are completely harmless.

Nevertheless, you can get rid of them!

From personal experience. A dear family member of mine has some and they want to get rid of them. We found a great way to get rid of them. And no, clipping with fingernail clippers is not the solution. Ouch!

Nail Polish! Just dab a very little amount on the skin tag. Top, and sides, but not your skin. Check the skin tag to make sure there is always some nail polish on it. Let nature do the rest. the nail polish suffocates the skin tag, causing it to die, turn black and fall off! It's amazing and almost pain free! Small skin tags fall off within three days. And larger ones can take up to three weeks or more. It's worth the time though. Especially when a bottle of nail polish is less than 99c. Who wants to painfully freeze them off when you can do this?

Skin may become slightly red or irritated around skin tag. But do not worry.
Skin tag may get larger. Which is normal because the skin tag is just coming out of your skin. It is even possible for the skin tag to double in size.

So happy skin tag killing. Please comment and post your results with skin tags!

Prunella vulgaris/ Heal All/ Self Heal

August's Featured Alternative- HARVESTING!
Prunella Vulgarius - Heal All
This beautiful flowering herb is not called heal all for no reason. It's mouth shaped flowers, rough-like little hairs and long tops is something that every home should have.To buy such a thing would cost you more than $60 on Amazon.

So why waste your money when (from my experience) grows from Ohio all the way across through to the panhandle in northern Idaho.

They are ready for picking as soon as a flower has bloomed on it. Here are some pictures of my harvesting last month.

Prunella Vulgaris, grown in sunny, wet, dry, and shady conditions. Along trails, besides rivers, etc. this can be found everywhere. Grows to about 1-2ft tall. Purple Flowers. This particular site where I harvested in along side trail to the scenic Kootenai river, in North Western Montana.

Scenic Kootenai River, Montana
___________________________________________________________

I harvested about a pound Prunella Vulgaris. I must admit, I was very surprised to see such large tops! Some larger than the size of my pinky finger. I have never seen them so big. It must be the Montana air or something because in Ohio they were small.
The largest one I picked was almost the size of my index finger!

What is Prunella Vulgaris used for? Stay tuned for more! Until next time. Thanks for reading!

The Furtilizer Story
A Natural "Holistic" Plant Food

Furtilizer™ is a complete, "pro-biotic" organic liquid plant food, specifically formulated to meet the nutritional needs of all plants. Made from the rich goodness of pure rabbit droppings, it provides plants with the standard nutrients found in all fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), but it does more ... a lot more.

Your Plants Need Living Soil, Not Just Dirt
Any commercial fertilizer can make plants grow, but you get caught in a never ending dead end cycle. If you stop fertilizing, your plants will show signs of impaired growth. They may not immediately shrivel up and die, but they will not flourish. Roots will not grow big and strong, budding will be inhibited, blossoms will not be big and vibrant, and fruits and vegetables will be scrawny, meager, and will not taste fresh and crisp. Furtilizer™ is different ... it is a complete food, reconditioning the soil itself.

Furtilizer™
infuses plants with natural growth nutrients, turning ordinary dirt into living soil.

After supplying plants with a full spectrum of natural macro and micro nutrients, the unique synergistic soil enhancing properties of FurtilizerTM  go to work. Natural soil microbial activity is increased, soil nutrient exchange capacity is expanded, nutrient retention is enhanced, and botanical photosynthesis capacity increases. Quietly, Furtilizer™ builds the kind of soil that can sustain robust plant life without massive and never-ending doses of environmentally harmful fertilizer. Your dirt turns into rich, living soil!
We constantly strive to improve our products, and we invite your comments. Let us know just how Furtilizer TM has performed for your plants. We especially enjoy receiving before and after photos of scrawny plants revived with Furtilizer TM!

People keep asking us:
"How do you make this great stuff?"
Naturally, when a unique new product works as well as FurtllizerTM, people want to know everything about it, including how it's made. Of course, we can't divulge the exact recipe or process, but we can give enough information to show you we take this business seriously ... perhaps a little too seriously!
Someday you might even encounter someone who claims to have a natural plant food derived from the goodness of rabbit droppings. Rest assured, whatever they have it's not FurtilizerTM  We invented the process development, and we are the only company with the technical knowledge to make the best natural rabbit-based plant food.

Research

Rabbits are Lagomorphs, and they eat copious quantities of green foliage, grains, bark, and other vegetable matter. What goes in must come out! That's pretty simple, but it means that our first concern is controlling what goes into our rabbits in the first place.
Most domestic rabbits are fed commercial rabbit pellets that contain ingredients to make rabbits grow faster and build bone quickly. This is great if you are raising rabbits for meat, fur, or pets, but it has terrible consequences if you are making a concentrated liquid plant food from rabbit droppings. Rabbit pellet feed typically contains molasses, salt, chlorine chloride, artificial flavors, and many other things you probably don't want on your plants in a concentrated form.
As we discovered, manufacturing a quality liquid plant food from the natural goodness of rabbit droppings requires extensive feed research, specially formulated feed, a controlling feeding schedule, and innovative technology.
Quality Control
One challenge we faced was finding a way to collect rabbit droppings before they become contaminated by urine, dirt, and other undesirable substances. Simply allowing dropping to fall to the ground or into a pan is unacceptable, because it causes degradation of the plant food source. Through trial and error, we developed a system to collect the droppings before they become contaminated.

It's The Water!

All liquid plant food contains water. If that water isn't pure, the plant food is compromised. Government "experts" tell us that tap water is safe. But why do so many people buy bottle water, or use additional filters? We feel that average tap water is simply not suitable for a quality liquid plant food. Do you really want to pour chlorine, trace metals, and who knows what on your precious plants? We use only pure Willamette Valley spring water to make
FurtilizerTM.
New Technology
Since we pioneered this business, we had to invent our own technology. A major challenge was to find a way to destroy potentially harmful bacteria, naturally found in rabbit droppings, without also destroying the beneficial natural micro-nutrients. Sterilization is easy, but it sacrifices too much for FurtilizerTM.
We solar "bake" the rabbit droppings used in making FurtilizerTM at predetermined temperatures for precise times, not only to neutralize potentially harmful bacteria, but to also remove offensive odors. The rabbit droppings are then pulverized into a fine powder, and filtered through an almost never-ending series of metal, nylon, and natural fiber meshes.
After much time and effort, we invented an ingenious hot-and-cold emulsification process that "pulls out" the beneficial micro-growth nutrients from the powder. This is followed with a labor-intensive 12 step "drip" process to liquefy these essential growth nutrients. From this we create a super-concentrated formula that is so powerful it will burn plants if it is not precisely diluted. However, once correctly diluted, this concentrate becomes a potent natural plant food so mild, that you can use it on your most delicate seedlings!
The FurtilizerTM manufacturing process literally goes on and on. But you can see from the information, we can reveal that the manufacturing process is precise and innovative. It is more complicated and labor intensive than most people would ever imagine. We leave nothing to chance. We don't brew in behemoth vats and stockpile in dingy warehouses. Each bottle of FurtilizerTM is freshly brewed and bottled by hand the old fashioned way ... one bottle at a time. To help save our precious natural resources, we use bottles made only from recycled plastics. There is simply no other way of doing it right. And, there is no other product like FurtilizerTM!
Helps Plants Grow the Natural Way!
This potent natural plant food seeks out the microscopic roots of plants and saturates them with a profusion of essential macro and micro growth nutrients. It works well on all plants ... everything from tulips to turnips! Each drop is a storehouse of natural botanical vitamins.
FurtilizerTM helps your plants do what they are naturally meant to do: grow and grow and grow!
 Natural, Non-Toxic, Biodegradable, Inexpensive:
FurtilizerTM Works On All Plants:

House plants of all types!

Vegetables and flowers!

Bushes, shrubs, all outdoor plants!

Even works great on lawns!

Unhealthiest Juices in America

 #6: WORST CRANBERRY COCKTAIL
Ocean Spray Cran-Apple (8 fl oz)
130 calories
0 g fat
32 g sugars

Ocean Spray makes a whole line of cranberry juice blends, but there’s only one thing you need to know: They’re all polluted with unruly loads of added sugar. The first two ingredients here are water and sugar, the hallmark of an inferior bottle. In fact, the best juices in this line have only 27 percent juice. This one? A paltry 15 percent.

____________________________________________

#5: WORST MIXED-BERRY BLEND
Welch’s Mountain Berry (8 fl oz)
140 calories
0 g fat
33 g sugars

The flowering bouquet of fruit on the outside of this carton makes it appear to be just one step down from a smoothie, but in truth, it’s just one step up from Sunny Delight. Regardless of what Welch’s wants you to think, this juice is made with only 25 percent real fruit, and with this many calories in each cup, you should expect nothing less than 100 percent.

____________________________________________

#4: WORST LEMONADE
Minute Maid Lemonade (20 fl oz bottle)
250 calories
0 g fat
67.5 g sugars

In 99 percent cases, lemonade contains between 10 and 15 percent lemon juice, meaning that 85 to 90 percent of the calories are added as table sugar or high fructose corn syrup. The reason we pinned Minute Maid as the worst lemonade is that with this bottle, they’ve dropped the lemon juice concentration down to 3 percent, and at the same time, jacked the sugar level up to soda-like proportions. In fact, this bottle has more sugar than a same-sized bottle of Coca-Cola, not to mention a bevy of preservatives, fillers, and artificial colors.

____________________________________________

#3: WORST JUICE
SoBe Elixir Cranberry Grapefruit (20 fl oz bottle)
250 calories
0 g fat
63 g sugars

With a name that references two fruits, you might expect this bottle to provide a respectable dose of real juice. Sadly, that’s not the case. The only juice this bottle carries is used as a coloring agent, which means every gram of sugar here is added during processing. That puts it right alongside soda as one of the worst beverages at the supermarket.
____________________________________________

#2: WORST GRAPE JUICE
Tropicana Grape Juice Beverage (15.2 fl oz)
290 calories
0 g fat
72 g sugars

It’s hard to say which is worse, the fact that this bottle has as much sugar as six scoops of Edy’s Slow Churned Rocky Road Ice Cream, or the fact that it looks legit but contains only 30 percent real juice. The thing is, even if this bottle weren’t teeming with high fructose corn syrup, it would still be loaded with sugar. Grapes produce the most sugar-loaded juice at the supermarket—even a 10-ounce bottle of 100 percent grape juice carries more than 200 calories.

 ____________________________________________

#1: WORST CANNED JUICE
Arizona Kiwi Strawberry (23.5 oz can)
360 calories
0 g fat

84 g sugars

These hulking calorie cannons—5 percent juice, 95 percent sugar water—have the equivalent of 20 teaspoons of sugar! (That makes the 1,800-calorie salad look downright nutritious.) They're sold at gas stations and convenience stores across America for the low, low price of 99 cents, making this quite possibly the cheapest source of empty calories in the country.

The Health Benefits of Teas

By Alyse Levine

Concept
The media has exhaustively publicized the numerous ways drinking tea is good for you: from fighting certain
cancers, to decreasing the risk of heart disease and Alzheimer's disease, to controlling cholesterol and even reducing tooth decay! Although most people are aware of tea's health benefits, they are not aware of which teas are the most beneficial. So, from a health perspective, are all teas created equal?

Nutritional Facts and Figures
What are the purported health benefits of consuming tea?

Before we begin, note that here we are talking about tea from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, and not
herbal teas, which are really derived from the flowers, leaves, seeds, bark, or roots of certain plants but contain no actual “real” tea (herbal teas do have purported health benefits, but they are beyond the scope of this bite).
Studies have shown that tea may promote good health in the following ways:

*Heart Health: The
polyphenols (antioxidants) found in tea are very effective in preventing cholesterol from oxidizing and damaging blood vessels. Green tea has been shown to improve the health of the delicate cells lining the blood vessels, which helps lower one's risk of heart disease (1).

*Cancer Prevention: The polyphenols (catechins in particular) in tea may help prevent or decrease the growth and spread of certain cancers. They scavenge oxidants before cell injuries occur, reduce the incidence and size of chemically induced tumors, and inhibit the growth of tumor cells. In studies of liver, skin, and stomach cancer, chemically induced tumors were shown to decrease in size in mice that were fed green and black tea (2,3).

*Skin Protector: Not only has tea been shown to be effective in decreasing cancer risk when consumed orally, but it may also be beneficial when applied superficially to the skin (4). Some research has shown that when green tea is applied to sunburned skin it decreases the development of cancerous skin tumors. This evidence has led many cosmetics companies to start adding green tea to their skin care products.

*Alzheimer's Disease Arsenal: Both green and black teas have been shown to hinder the activity of two enzymes in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease. Although tea consumption cannot cure Alzheimer's, it may be another part of the puzzle in treating or slowing down the development of the disease (5).

*Good for Teeth: Compounds in tea protect teeth by increasing the acid resistance of tooth enamel and acting as antibiotics that kill off dangerous, decay-promoting bacteria (6). Tea also contains fluoride, which is essential for keeping teeth strong and healthy.

Which tea varieties provide the above health benefits?

All "real" teas, which include green, black, and oolong tea varieties, are beneficial to your health. As mentioned above, these teas are all derived from the same tea plant, Camellia sinensis, and contain numerous healthful compounds including polyphenols (particularly catechins), tocopherol, vitamin C, as well as other antioxidants. The polyphenols are believed to be responsible for most of tea's role in promoting good health. Although black, green and oolong teas have different polyphenol compositions due to processing differences, they all have been shown to provide the above health benefits.

The differences between the teas are depicted below. As you can see, the main difference between the "real" teas is simply in how the leaves are processed.

Green Teas (Japanese, Chinese, Gunpowder, etc...)
Green teas are the freshest and least processed because they are not at all fermented. Of all "real" teas, green tea has the lightest and most subtle taste.

Black Teas (Darjeeling, Earl Grey, China Black, Jasmine, etc...)
Black tea is simply green tea that has been fermented for around 6 hours. Fermentation turns the green leaves black and alters the polyphenol content, though it is still very high in antioxidants. Black teas have the strongest taste.

Oolong Teas
These teas are made from green teas that are briefly fermented. Therefore, they are a compromise between black and green tea in both taste and color.

To Get the Most Out of Tea:
*To get the benefits claimed above, opt for a "real" tea variety (green, black, or oolong), as opposed to an herbal tea
*Steep tea for about 3 minutes; this time allotment enables the health promoting compounds to be released; steeping for much longer turns the tea bitter and releases too much tannin, which can irritate the digestive tract, cause constipation, and decrease iron absorption.
*Hot or Cold? Go for what you like! Bottled teas, iced tea, and teas made from mixes are also all rich in polyphenols. However, keep iced tea fresh, the polyphenol content starts to deteriorate after a few days.

Note on Caffeine:
If you are worried about the
caffeine content of tea, opt for the decaffeinated varieties...they provide the same health benefits without keeping you up all night.

Alyse's Advice
The next time you reach for a warm, soothing cup of tea, opt for either green, black or oolong varieties, and steep for about 3 minutes. If you prefer the iced kind, follow the same guidelines but make sure to finish it within a few days before the antioxidant content starts to decline. A few cups of tea a day may help keep the heart doctor and dentist away, as well as cancer and Alzheimer's disease at bay.

25 ways to clean with vinegar

25 ways to clean with vinegar

by Emily Hsieh

The cleaning aisle at just about any grocery store is stocked with a dizzying array of options—and when it comes down to it, there are a lot of expensive, toxic, superfluous products crowding the market. Chances are, you already have one of the best, all-purpose cleaning agents in your pantry: white vinegar. Vinegar actually works as a great laundry booster, stripping away the chemical build-up that detergent leaves behind (and gets rid of clingy odors in the process). And beyond that, there are tons of other applications for the stuff around your home. Here, from vinegartips.com and frugalfun.com, 25 ideas for making the most of vinegar:
1. Deodorize the sink: Pour 1 cup baking soda, followed by 1 cup hot vinegar, down the drain. Let sit for at least 5 minutes, then rinse with hot water.
2. Deodorize the garbage disposal: Make ice cubes out of vinegar. Run the disposal with a few vinegar ice cubes and cold water.
3. Clean countertops: Wipe down surfaces with a rag dipped in vinegar.
4. Clean the fridge: Use a mixture of half water, half vinegar to wipe down the interior shelves and walls.
5. Remove soap build-up and odors from the dishwasher: Once a month, pour 1 cup of vinegar into an empty dishwasher and run the machine through its entire cycle.
6. Bust oven grease: If you’ve got grease spots on the oven door, pour some vinegar directly on the stains, let it sit for 15 minutes, and wipe away with a sponge.
7. To make old glassware sparkle: To get rid of the cloudy effect, wrap a vinegar-soaked towel around the glass and let it sit. Remove and rinse with hot water.
8. Get rid of lime deposits on your tea kettle: Fill the kettle with vinegar and let it bowl. Allow it to cool, and rinse with water.
9. Remove stains in coffee cups: Create a paste using of equal parts vinegar and salt (or in lieu of salt, baking soda) and scrub gently before rinsing.
10. Treat Tupperware stains (and stinkiness): Wipe the containers with a vinegar-saturated cloth.
11. Remove stains on aluminum pots: Boil 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water.
12. Deter ant infestations: Spray outside doorways and windowsills, and anywhere you see a trail of critters.
13. Clean can openers: Scrub the wheel of your can opener with vinegar using an old toothbrush.
14. Remove stickers or labels: Cover the sticker with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Let it sit overnight—it should slide right off by morning.
15. Shine porcelain sinks: A bit of vinegar and a good scrub should leave them sparkling.
16. Clean grout: Pour on some vinegar, let it hang out for a few minutes, and buff with an old toothbrush.
17. Clean the shower door: Spray them down with vinegar pre-shower, or post (after you’ve squeegeed the glass) to remove hard water deposits.
18. Clean a grimy showerhead: To get rid of scum, fill a Ziploc with ½ a cup of baking soda and 1 cup vinegar and tie it around the showerhead. Let it sit for an hour, until the bubbling has stopped. Remove the bag and run  the shower.
19. Make a toilet sparkle: Pour in a cup or two of vinegar and let it sit there overnight before scrubbing with a toilet brush.
20. Polish linoleum floors: Add 1 cup of vinegar for every gallon of water you use to wash the floor.
21. Clean paintbrushes: Soak paintbrushes for an hour before simmering them on the stove to remove hardened paint. Drain and rinse.
22. Clean grills: Spray vinegar on a ball of tin foil, then use it to give the grate a firm scrub.
23. Disinfect wood cutting boards: Wipe down wood boards with a wash of vinegar.
24. Clean the microwave: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 2 cups water and ½ cup vinegar. Heat it on full power for 3-4 minutes until it comes to a boil. Keep the door closed for a few minutes longer to let the steam fill the microwave, loosening the grime. Remove the bowl (carefully!) and wipe down interior walls with a sponge.
25. Polish patent leather accessories: Give them a rub with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Buff with a dry cloth.

Featured Alternative: Weeds #2 - Cattail

Cattail (Typha latifolia) - the pollen can be used to enrich flour. The unripe flower spikes can be cooked as a vegetable and the young shoots and inner stems are eaten raw or cooked. It is even known to use them as torches when dipped into oil or animal fat. You can even make beautiful baskets out of the leaves.

Made into a poultice is good for cuts wounds, stings and bruises. Ash from the burned leaves can be used as an antiseptic or styptic for wounds.

The 'fluff' from the tops can be used as pillow stuffing and insulation for clothing.

Featured Alternative: Weeds #1 - Burdock

Burdock (Arctium lappa) - cultivated as a vegetable in Japan where it is known as gobo. The stalks are scraped and cooked like celery. The roots are sweet and can be eaten raw in salads or added to stir fries.
Traditionally, burdock has been used as a remedy for measles, arthritis, tonsillitis, viruses like colds, throat pain, and as a diuretic.
Mostly thought to be a weed because it's good for sticking to you and your furry pets. Keep in mind, once its burrs have opened, tiny hair-like needles 'thorn' themselves into your skin. Don't worry, the itching will go away and a rash may appear, but it will be gone in about a day or so.

Ask The Herbalist: How do I fix my dogs ears I don't know whats wrong?

"We took him to the vet and they gave us cream and antibiotics and they didnt seam to help. We cant afford to take him to the vet at this time. We tried alot of over the counter earmite stuff but nothing seems to work. Sometimes hes in so much pain he cant sit still i try to clean his ears with q-tips black scab like stuff comes out"

Your dog has ear mites! When dogs have ear mites the ears produce wax, the blackness is the bloody scabs from scratching. We brought a stray cat into the house about 3 weeks ago. Our Shih-Tzu got them in less than 24hours! Squirt an eye dropper full of mineral oil into each ear. Wait about 5 minutes. This will loosen the scabs. Take a cotton ball and wipe out and a q-tip is needed. do not use hydrogen peroxide. Keep your dog's ears dry! Any substance with water will just feed the mites to grow. The mineral oil suffocates the ear mites. Do this for 3 days on the 4th day take a break. Then continue again for 3 more days, take a break on the 4th day. Continue this until the ear wax stops building up in the ear until the inflammation goes away. The mites weren't so bad in our dogs ear because we caught it as soon as it happened. Her ear mites were gone in a week. But the life cycle of the mites is 6 weeks. You may need to do the treatment that long

Vaccume a little extra and wash where your dog sleeps.

If you have cats you must do this same to the cats.

As the Herbalist: What should you do when a dog is having a heart attack?

Getting to a vet before it is too late is almost impossible if you dog is in the middle of a heart attack.

Anything can be harmful if not given in proper amounts... however, Cayenne Pepper is actually beneficial to dogs when administered properly.

Cayenne Pepper:

Perhaps the greatest natural stimulant known, Cayenne has been called the single greatest "driver" of other herbs. No other herb is quite in this class making it a must for all formulas. Simply said, when you need to get an herb to any location in the body cayenne reins supreme. The uses of cayenne are so numerous that it has been claimed "the single greatest herb." Some of the common uses are anal problems (to include hemorrhoids), heart attack, toothache, external bleeding, diphtheria, all sorts of eye conditions, wounds of all types, clearing the mucous membranes etc.

------------------------

To humans, cayenne has been used to stop a heart attack in less than 30 seconds!!!

DOG HEART ATTACK SYMPTOMS
Heart attacks occur in dogs for much the same reasons as they do in human beings. Old age, obesity and diabetic conditions are contributory factors but heart attacks can strike due to many other medical conditions.

When Dogs have a Heartattack the animal experiences pain in his fore limbs and shows it by stretching his arms. The dog also tries to crane and stretch his neck sideways. Dog Heart Symptoms to look out for are apparent difficulties in breathing, sweating and signs of unconsciousness like drowsy eyes. The moment these Dog Heart Attack Symptoms are noticed it may be prudent to remove any leash on the dog and try and talk to the dog out of his uneasiness with the aim of making him more receptive to instructions. This also helps should the dog be slipping into a comatose condition. No water or other liquids should be administered to the dog in this condition. In inclement weather such dogs must be kept warm. A veterinarian must be called or an ambulance summoned so that the Dog having the Heart Attack is evacuated to an animal hospital without delay. Until the doctor or ambulance arrives, first aid for resuscitation must be initiated much the same way as it is done in human beings.

Dog Heartattacks Symptoms also occur due to a variety of cardiac and pulmonary disorders. Most of these medical problems can be set right if they are detected soon enough. So if your dog is in the high risk zone of obesity and old age you must look out for the symptoms.

June's Featured Alternative: Baths

Yuck! You stink, you need a bath! While many think of a bath to simply be a way to cleanse the skin it has many other purposes as well. It is called hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy involves the use of water for pain-relief and treating illness. The term hydrotherapy itself is synonymous with the term Water cure as it was originally marketed by practitioners and promoters in the 1800s.
Since it is such a large alternative method, this month’s ‘Featured Alternative' will be the ‘bath’ part of hydrotherapy. There are many different therapeutic baths.

Throughout the month of April AltHealing101 will post the different baths, their benefits and directions for each. Subscribe so you won’t miss out on this amazing method!

Featured Alternative Hydrotheropy: Contrast Baths

Partial Baths #1

  1. Contrast Baths: The immersion of the hand, arm and hand, foot, leg and foot into a basin or tub of water. It is both simple and effective. Also known as a Alternate Hot and Cold is an alternating plunge of the body into hot water, then into cold and back again. This results in a powerful alternate contraction, the dilatation of the blood vessels, and a general improvement of body circulation. For the particular body area being treated, it removed waste products and greatly improves rapidity of blood flow. Not to mention, the quality of fresh oxygen, nutrients, and white and red blood cells is also increased.

Contrast baths to the hands, feet, arms, or legs are very helpful for fractures, arthritis (both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis), congestive headaches, edema, sprains, strains, trauma (after 24 hours), infections, lymphangitis (2-3 times a day), impaired venous circulation, and indolent ulcers.
What You Will Need:

For a Contrast Bath, you will need two containers, large enough for the water in them to come up over the extremities to be treated. If necessary, thoroughly cleaned buckets can be used. Medical personnel recommend that an antiseptic be placed in the water if there are open wounds. You will also need a bath thermometer and a bath towel. You will also need a pitcher, to add more hot water from time to time, and ice cubes for the cold water bucket. Sometimes a cold compress (hand towel wrung from cold water) or ice bag is used.

How to Apply It:

  1. Place the limb in hot water (105-110F) for 305 minutes. Then put it into the cold (cold tap water or ice water) for one-half to one minute.
  2. Begin with the hot water and end with the cold. Change from one temperature to the other 6-8 times (3-4 complete cycles). Time spans are generally 3-4 minutes in the hot and, then, one-half to one minute in the cold. Begin hot immersion at lower temperature as you continue on through the treatment. Add hot water by pouring it over your own hand; add it while the limb is in the cold water. A cold compress (hand towel wrung out of cold water) or ice bag may be needed on the head or back of neck, if a large part of the body is being treated and always if he feels faint. Place an ice bag to the heart if his pulse is over 8- beats per minute. (In serious cases, it is best to check his pulse every 5 minutes during treatment.
  3.  End by drying the limb thoroughly. Have him rest afterward for a half hour.
Additional Points:
  1.  Do not normally use hot water temperatures above 110F
  2. In blood vessel diseases of the legs and feet, do not go over 105F.
  3. Extremes of hot and cold water should not be used in diabetes or in peripheral vascular disease.
  4. When working with rheumatoid arthritis, end with the hot instead of the cold.

What Are The Benefits Of A Yeast Free Diet?

Let's start with the Problems with yeast! Having yeast in your diet is like have your car exhaust in the atmosphere, it's bad. Yeast can cause all sorts of infections; the infections can occur in the mouth, on the skin, inside of the body, and on the genitals. Too much yeast in your system is what causes these infections and people with weakened immune systems, such as someone with cancer or AIDS, are more prone to acquiring this type of infection. Yeast can also cause day-to-day problems with headaches, digestion, memory, weight, lethargy, and the list keeps going.

Removing yeast from your diet obviously reduces the risk of running into some of the problems listed above. It also helps lose weight, get into shape, remove toxins and chemicals that other foods have released into your body, and can give your more energy. Think about it, yeast is used in the fermentation process beer production, so just imagine what is doing to your body. Yeast removal helps men, women, and children; it can help symptoms of Autism, Crohn's Disease, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Thrush, Eczema, and Psoriasis to name a few.

Eating yeast free foods and cooking yeast free does not have to taste bad, nor do you have to remove bread products. There are several recipes out there that are delicious; I have found recipes for meals, desserts, breads, and there are even recipes for yeast free vegan meals. You will lose weight and feel better all around, more energy, less of the day-to-day problems like headaches, memory loss, aches and pains.

          Stress relief

To my surprise, while browsing for crochet patterns I came to find out some interesting stuff. Did you know it has been proven that crocheting and knitting are effective to relief stress, anxiety, depression.
It is especially useful with those in pain as well. While doing the repetitive movements and stitches it is known to help the brain, thus relaxing it, which can lower blood pressure, help the heart rate and even boost the immune system! Needlework has helped many, the calming effect this has on the brain is also beneficial to children with ADHD, reducing disruptive behavior!

So get out the needles and work those fingers while relieving stress! Not only will you get an awesome finished project, but maybe even a better you!

          Baking Soda- Natural Teeth Whittening

For those who want perfectly white teeth, but are unable to afford a pretty penny at the dentist to have them bleached... why not try the alternative?

While the following method is not guaranteed to work for everyone nor has been approved by the FDA, is harmless and has been successful on many. The key is consistency. If this method is continued until desired results are met, you may have a beautiful smile again!

          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baking Soda: The most successful method of them all. Can be done a few different ways. This method has been used since the 18th century as a teeth cleaning agent!

              If you don't mind the salty taste;

          1. Simply wet your tooth brush,
          2. Sprinkle on tooth brush, or dip into a little baking soda in the palm of your hand. Make sure to cover the entire toothbrush.
          3. Brush as you normally would. Be sure to leave in mouth at least 2  minutes.
          4. Rinse.
          5. *Optional: To remove the salty taste from your mouth brush teeth again with preferred tooth paste.
                 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Can't stand the salty taste?;
          1. Wet tooth brush.
          2. Squirt 'pea' size drop of tooth paste on tooth brush.
          3. With 'clean' finger spread the tooth paste on all sides of tooth brush.
          4. Sprinkle on tooth brush, or dip into a little bit of baking soda in the palm of your hand. Be sure to leave in your mouth at least 2 minutes.
          5. Brush as you normally would.
          6. Rinse.
           -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What exactly does Baking Soda do to your teeth?
          1. Leaves teeth super fresh, smooth and shiny.
          2. Removes plaque build-up.
          3. Removes coffee, wine, smoker stains, etc.
          4. Keeps teeth white and clean.
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Warnings:
          1. If your teeth are white, then this method should only be used every 1-2 weeks. Because it can be abrasive to your teeth enamel if used too much. If you are trying to remove stains/yellowness only use 1-3 times a week for the first week. 1-2 times the second week and 1 time the third week, then skip a week. After a month you should have white teeth depending on the amount of stains.
          2. Baking Soda can also dissolve orthodontic glue. DO NOT try this method if you have a permanent retainer or wear braces.
             -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
            "This stuff really works!"

"Wow! I saw results after the first brushing!"

"Your teeth look beautiful! How did you do it?"

             -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Please post your results!
